"I’m not knocking the hustle, I want everyone to make enough to feel comfortable, but I do worry when the point becomes the hustle rather than the thing itself." I really appreciate this thoughtful post, Cassie. I'm sort of recoiling from "the hustle" that is Substack right now. It's a huge distraction, and I don't need a million subscribers. I'm taking the advice that resonates with me and ignoring the rest.
it's hard to see past the hustle! Even newsletters I love. I totally get it, Kathy. I love looking at news lettering like a crow--just picking up all the shiny objects and going back to my cave.
This is really helpful! I've sometimes received an ARC, pitched some publications, not heard back, grown frustrated as time passes, and then wondered if I should just write about the book on my Substack, or interview the author there. It could be more fun, more intimate, etc. But way less reach, yes. I wonder if it's the sort of thing that could be nice maybe 6 months to a year after the book is out, when the author might appreciate an interview or informal, celebratory (Substack) review? But overall, thanks for explaining how this is seen from the PR side of things.
I LOVE THIS. Absolutely! Your substack is also a gem, so you are probably getting pitches for interviews. It's like ... any publicity is good publicity, but how large is the ask (I think that's my notion!)

On point, as always! Sharing this with my Discord community.
Appreciate you!!!
“…did you know you can just submit yourself to “Substack Featured Publication” for that little ribbon?” SHUT UP! It’s like the Hollywood Walk of Fame!
HAHAHA. This is the BEST comment.
I’m growing to hate the word HUSTLE. Can’t we just like laugh and share and eat chips?
this comment is my love language!
